Conductor's Heroic Deed Produces Morbid Monument


 

In 1887, a railroad conductor leaped from a caboose to save the lives of a woman and her child. Though his heroic actions saved two lives, he sacrificed his own in the pricess... but not before leaving an imprint of his head on the boxcar he struck. The above story appeared in the Carbondale Daily News on June 16, 1887.
