The Littlestown Mystery Grave

St. Aloysius Church, Littlestown

With a history dating back to the 1760s, the Adams County borough of Littlestown is proud of its long and storied past. However, locals were stumped in 1926 when workers unearthed a brick-lined grave during the construction of a parochial school adjoining St. Aloysius' Church on Charles and Queen Streets. While the site had been occupied by an earlier church erected in 1822, there is no record of a cemetery-- and since the grave appeared to be empty, it's anyone's guess as to who-- or what-- may have been buried there at one time.

Was this a grave built for an early settler who had been buried someplace else? Or did thieves discover the grave before the construction workers? The following article comes from the June 4, 1926 edition of the Hanover Evening Sun.
