Hershey Monkey Cages Used As Jail Cells
ZooAmerica in Hershey can trace its roots back to 1905, when Milton S. Hershey was gifted a dozen prairie dogs by Franz and Louise Zinner. Five years later, the Zinners gifted Hershey a black bear, and from these humble beginnings the Hershey Park Zoo was born.
While this history is not very well known, an even lesser known detail about the zoo is that its discarded monkey cages were actually used by the borough of Hershey in 1928 for the local jail. The following article comes from the September 28, 1928 edition of the Ephrata Review.
